AcroTeX Builder Utilities

There are two builder utilities: AeB Builder and AeB Exam Builder. Each of these is described below.

AeB Builder

AeB Builder is an application designed to process one or more LaTeX source files by converting them into PDF files. The AeB Builder supports PDF creation using two workflows: (1) TEX to DVI to PS to PDF, where Adobe Distiller is used in the final step for PDF creation; (2) TEX to PDF using pdflatex. Documentation is available under the Help menu.

For those who use AeB (AcroTeX eDucation Bundle), there are options to re-purpose the source file: for screen size, for paper, no solutions, solutions after, etc.

Renditions: Another (powerful) feature of AeB Builder is renditions. Within a single source file, you can have many versions, or renditions. AeB Builder can take a file that has renditions and create an output file for each rendition. The source file uses the renditions package written especially for this purpose. The renditions package can be downloaded from CTAN here.

Requirements: AeB Builder is a Microsoft Windows only application. Workflows supported are distiller, pdflatex, and xelatex. If the distiller workflow is used, Acrobat/Distiller version 6 or later is required. Acrobat/Distiller is not required for this utility to work with the other workflows, however.

Installation: Go to the installation page.

Test files: The test files that I used are contained in the zip file aebBuilderTestFiles.zip. Use them to initially test the system, and get a feel for the controls. The file test_index.tex is not only a simple test file, but also lists and explains the other test files.

Bugs and feature requests: Bugs and feature requests should be sent to dpstory at acrotex dot net.

AeB Exam Builder

AeB Exam Builder is an application designed to process one or more eqexam source files located in the same folder by converting them into PDF files. The Exam Builder supports PDF creation using two workflows: (1) TEX to DVI to PS to PDF, where Adobe Acrobat Distiller is used in the final step for PDF creation; (2) TEX to PDF, where pdflatex is used in the final step for PDF creation.

The main features of the Exam Builder are

Automatic creation of up to four files. Exam Builder has much the same functionality as AeB Exam Builder, but is designed for source files created for the eqexam package. For any given eqexam file, Exam Builder can automatically build up to four PDF files: (1) problems only; (2) problems with solutions after (an answer key); (3) problems with solutions at the end of the document; and (4) solutions only.

Set eqexam options. There is a dialog box that offers most of the package options for eqexam so can design the document(s) right from AeB Builder.

Support for multiple versions, also called renditions. The eqexam package has rather extensive support for versions or renditions which predates the renditions package written for the AeB Exam Builder. If the file is properly prepared, several versions or renditions can be produced from the same source file.
